FAQ

Come here if you have any questions.

What is a Fell?

Fell is the northern word for a hill or mountain. You can find fells in places like the Lake District and the Pennines!

What is the difference between the day membership and the standard membership?

If you buy the day membership, you can then buy a ticket for a day trip, any socials tickets, and a ball ticket. You can also borrow any kit you will need for the trips that we have available, such as waterproof trousers and a headtorch.

The standard membership is the same as the day membership except that it allows you to also buy tickets for the weekend trips.

The upgrade option is available if you have a day membership but decide that you would like to upgrade to a weekend membership, rather than paying the full price.

Do I need to have done any fellwalking before?

Nope! We aim to be as inclusive as possible and welcome everyone to come along no matter their previous experience. For our day walks we have walks for all abilities, so if you haven’t done much walking before just make sure to sign up for the shorter walk when we come around to tell you which routes we’re doing.

What is the difference between day walks and weekend walks?

Weekend walks (particularly those in Scotland) are generally longer and have more elevation gain, so we recommend that you have some hiking experience for these trips, even if that is that you have previously been on a day trip.

I don’t have a headtorch/waterproof trousers/sleeping bag/boots that I will need for a trip, how can I borrow these?

Email our gear sec M.Claassen1@newcastle.ac.uk and let her know what you need to borrow as far in advance as possible, or message our Instagram (@newcastlefellwalking) and we will sort it out for you.

How can I find out when the upcoming trips are?

We have an approximate list of this semesters trip dates and locations on our Facebook group page that you can join (Newcastle University Fellwalking Society) and we also advertise upcoming trips on our Instagram. You can also find them on this website!

What is included in my day/weekend trip ticket?

Day tickets include a coach from Newcastle University to wherever we are walking, and back again. This is generally much cheaper and quicker than the equivalent journey would be on public transport! You will also have a choice of lovely walks led by our committee

A weekend involves transport by minivan to where we are going, two nights of accommodation (generally in a nice bunkhouse), and dinner on the Saturday night. We walk on both the Saturday and Sunday, and then drive back to Newcastle, dropping you off at your house/accommodation so you don’t have to walk back tired with all your kit!

What are the Wainwrights?

The Wainwrights are a list of 214 fells in the Lake District, all but one of which are over 1000ft. They are named after Alfred Wainwright and are outlined in his seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells which were published between 1955 and 1966. ‘Wainwright bagging’ involves trying to climb as many Wainwrights as possible.

What are the Munros?

A Munro is a mountain in Scotland that is above 3000ft (914m). There are 282 of them, and they are named after Sir Hugh Munro. The Munros are mostly higher than the Wainwrights, and often quite remote, so bagging all of them is a considerable challenge!
