Kit Lists

To come on our trips we have certain requirements for kit. This is so we can ensure the safety of you and other members. We have kept these as minimal as possible and to help you get involved we have a range of equipment like tents that we lend out from our gear store. We also have lists of recommended kit to help you find suitable kit at low cost.

If you have any questions about kit please speak to our Gear Secretary Laurie Cook who is happy to help with recommendations and any questions you might have (L.Cook11@ncl.ac.uk)!

  1. Day Walk Kit
  2. Weekend Kit

Day Walk Kit

The following must be brought on all trips to be able to participate in the walks:

  • Walking Boots (not shoes)
  • Waterproof Jacket (with hood)
  • Waterproof Over Trousers
  • Spare warm layers e.g. extra fleece or insulated jacket (In addition to what you are wearing)
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Head torch
  • Whistle
  • Food for the day
  • Water (around 1-2L)
  • Any personal medication needed for the duration of the trip e.g. EpiPen, Inhaler, Hayfever medication, etc.
  • A rucksack large enough to fit all of the above
  • Some way of keeping all your kit dry inside your bag e.g. dry bags, rucksack liner, even shopping bags work
  • Phone and money

Suitable clothing consists of:

  • Non-cotton trousers e.g. Walking trousers, Leggings, Synthetic tracksuit bottoms (NO JEANS!!)
  • A non-cotton T-shirt
  • A non-cotton fleece or jumper
  • Socks (Thicker walking socks are recommended to prevent blisters)

Synthetic clothing is favoured over cotton as it dries much faster. This means that when clothing gets wet, either through sweating or rain, it does not remain wet for long, preventing you from getting cold. Synthetic fleeces are also much warmer when wet than the cotton equivalent.

In addition to all of the above you may want to bring the following, depending on the weather:

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunhat
  • Sun cream
  • Extra water

Footwear

Due to the nature of the terrain we walk in, walking boots are required on all trips. This is because they offer a greater level of ankle support on uneven ground than shoes or trainers, reducing the chances of ankle injuries.

Boots must come above the ankle bone to offer the required support. Footwear that does not come up above the ankle are classes as shoes and do not offer the required support. Shoes are not an acceptable form of footwear on walks, this includes fell running trainers and walking shoes.

Please feel free to speak to someone on committee for advice or to check the suitability of any footwear before you buy them.

  • Change of shoes
  • A bag to carry all of the above e.g. holdall or large rucksack
