The 🔑 players.
President
Joshua Nicholson is the president. If you know what a president does in every other organisation, you can guess his job in NUFWS. (He’s the bloke in charge). Last year, Josh put NUFWS deeply in the red as treasurer 💰📉, so we forced him to become president and fix things.
“Hi, I am Josh, I am going into the third year studying Biology at Newcastle.
My favourite NUFWS memory is finding the newts on Aran Fawddwy.”

Vice President
Isabella Brunskill is our VP. This is a new role as of 2024/25 and so it’s hard to describe what she might do. Hopefully, not just the elements of everyone else’s job that they don’t want to do. Also, she’ll become president if Josh dies in a tragic accident. The probability of this is more than for the average person (See our Tryfan walk on the 1st Snowdonia trip last year). No pressure.

Social Secretaries
Our Social secs are Joe Hunt and Simon Ellwood. As social secs they must organise all the social events we have throughout the year like the annual ball, weekly pub meets, sober socials and more. They are also obliged to continue Jack Cota’s legacy, by following the philosophy of “Nads” in all society matters. Particularly on a Wednesday evening.
“Hi, I’m Joe, and I’m a 2nd year Urban Planning Student.
My favourite NUFWS memory is the Ball.”

“Hi, I’m Simon, and I’m a 2nd Year Masters MGH (Museum, Gallery, Heritage) Management Student.
My favourite NUFWS memory is an ice-cold plunge cold-swim in Crianlarich.”

Walk Planner
Matthew Dalby did not follow in Josh’s footsteps to seek a promotion from last year’s role, and thus is still our walk planner. He creates 3 route-cards for each trip to ensure everyone can take part in a walk suited to their ability. Unfortunately, it is up to the rest of committee to follow these routes properly.

Social Media Secretary
Jacob Peel has yet to beat the panic-master allegations, and is once again the social media sec. Widely regarded as the most important role, it involves managing the Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp community, and this website.
“Hi, I’m Jacob, and I’m a 4th year Human-Computer Interaction Student.
My favourite (fellwalking-related) NUFWS memory is the incredible views of the Pyrenees from the top of Tuca Salvaguardia on last year’s international trip.”

Welfare Secretary
The 2024/25 welfare sec is Livia Sullivan. She is responsible for looking after members and making sure everyone’s safe. You should email or message Liv if you have any society-related wellbeing concerns.
“Hi, I’m Livia, and I’m a 3rd year Pharmacology student.
My fave NUFWS memory is eating tuna on a bakewell tart on the summit of Arenig Fawr (-16°C)”

Gear Secretary
Laurence Cook is the gear secretary. He dictates what equipment the society should purchase and is responsible for making sure members have the right kit to attend a trip. You can find a kit list and purchase guide on this website, and if you aren’t sure, send him an email. And no, you don’t need gaiters or a garmin, no matter what he says.
“Hi, I’m Laurence, and I’m a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering student.
My favourite memory is Jacob crawling a lap around the outside of the bunkhouse at Crianlarich.”

Secretary
Em Richardson is our secretary secretary. The responsiblities of the secretary range from sending emails, to sending more emails, to booking bunkhouses (via email) and assisting planning of the NUFWS calendar (on outlook). Rumour has it, in some years the secretary actually does more for the society than the president.
“Hi, I’m Em, and I’m a 3rd year PhD Student in Speech and Language Sciences.
My favourite NUFWS memory was the Crianlarich trip last year, the day we got perfect weather and beautiful Autumn colours.”

Treasurer
Mark Ioannou is our treasurer. Being treasurer means you’re in charge of managing the society’s funds. Most of these funds go on transport and accommodation for trips and big social events like the ball and end-of-year trip. These funds primarily come from your membership and ticket purchases. Mark promises not to embezzle the society.
“Hi, I’m Mark, and I’m a 2nd year Physics Student.
My favourite NUFWS memory is being in the crazy wind on top of Rhinog Fach in Wales.”

Mascot
Following a leisurely Summer Nads has returned as our NUFWS mascot. He’s hoping to continue a long tradition of not doing owt, since he’s a stuffed toy.
