Patterdale day trip 28/10/2024

A nice sunny morning greeted us as we awoke after our nice lie in, thanks to the clocks going back, and embarked for Patterdale.

After arriving in Glenridding we set of on our walks in the warm morning sun. The long walk headed for Red Tarn via the beck skirting round the slopes of Birkhouse moor with its hidden Juniper higher up. From the tarn we ascended into the wind on Catstye Cam (890m) to enjoy the stunning panorama before heading up Swirral edge where we found ourselves very nicely in the windshield of Helvellyn. After reaching the plateau and some members overcoming their fear of heights we stopped for lunch on the leeward side of the plateau enjoy the views north towards Skiddaw, Blencathra and Ullswater. Upon reaching the summit of Helvellyn (949m) and some members doing pressups we continued on past the technical group and down along the ridge past Nethermost Pike (891m) and over Dollywaggon Pike (858m) before descending down to Grisedale tarn where the cold wind prevented us swimming. Descending down Grisedale past some beautiful if bedraggled cows in the wind and drizzle many bad jokes were enjoyed before we returned to the coach after a lovely day out.

The technical route lead by Matthew enjoyed Striding edge despite having to mend Emilys boot with wound tape before they summitted Helvellyn (949m) and then descended down Swirral edge to return to Glenridding and enjoy a pint in the Travellers rest where they were joined by the medium walk which had a lovely walk up onto St. Sunday crag (841m) led by Issy and Simone. The short walk despite a slight detour enjoyed the beautiful shoreline of Ullswater after they had ascended Place fell (667m).

Overall a great trip and thankfully the weather only came in on the bus ride home. -Josh
