Malham day trip 24/11/2024

On a wet morning after a week of cold temperatures we departed Newcastle in the pre-dawn light for the wonderful country of Yorkshire and Malham. After negotiating some large puddles created by some overflowing rivers we arrived safely to dry skies and good visibility.

There was for the first time this year a running group consisting of Josh and Dan and we set off up the muddy slopes of Ewe moor and along the ridge west before turning north through the streams of water running down the fellside and passing some lovely belted Galloway cattle. After a quick tour of Victoria’s cave where there was still a remnant of snow from the day before we headed east along the Pennine bridleway picking up the pace as the ground conditions improved as well as crossing several more swollen becks. We then turned north to Malham tarn where we met the medium group headed by Jacob and Matthew who had come up Malham cove and then up to Malham tarn before returning to Malham via Malham Lings and the cove once more. The runners continued on down to the cove before heading across to the impressive Gordale scar waterfall where we stopped for a fine Yorkshire pasty before running down past the beautiful Janet’s Foss down into Malham to complete a lovely relaxed 25km run. After changing at the coach we met back up with the other groups at the Buck Inn.

The short walk headed up to Malham cove and then after a brief detour headed up through Malham Lings and descended round to the base of Gordale scar and returned via Janet’s Foss.

The long walk headed up past Malham cove out towards Black hill the round the top of Malham Tarn where the stopped in a bird hide for lunch. Before continuing down to the top of Gordale scar and then back into Malham via Janet’s Foss.

Overall a lovely day out in beautiful Yorkshire
