Treasurer

Hello, my name is Mark and I’m applying for the position of Treasurer.
I come from Cyprus which is down south in the Mediterranean so even though I’m experienced with hiking, my first walk in the UK was quite a humbling experience in the unfamiliar north.
Since then, I’ve been on many of the trips, and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of them. This made me want to be more involved with the inner workings and decision making of the society.
I’ve been a scout for as long as I can remember and the last two years, I’ve been involved in a leading role mainly helping with activities and planning routes for hikes. Also, I’ve had a lot of experience keeping track of spreadsheets while doing my military service.
Although I prefer everything being well planned and organised, I tend to work well under pressure. I really like talking to and meeting new people on walks and I believe that I am a responsible person that one can depend on.

Ні, I’m Yasmin and I’m applying for the role as treasurer for next year’s committee.
My main motivation for wanting to become the treasurer is because of my longstanding interest in accounting and auditing. I am hoping in doing the role I develop a skillset that sets me up well for my career, as one day I hope to be ACA qualified
As a student of mathematics and economics, I have developed a strong foundation in analytical thinking and financial management. On top of this I am developing a comprehensive understanding of both numerical analysis and financial principles. This academic background equips me with the quantitative skills necessary to manage budgets, analyse financial data, and make informed decisions regarding our society’s resources, which is why I feel l am well suited to the role.
I also really love hiking and pretty much anything to do with the outdoors. I have lots of experience planning walks and trips, over the easter break I really enjoyed planning solo trips to the Scottish Highlands and to the lake district, and (mostly) successfully navigating the walks | had planned.
Social Media Secretary

(For Readability)
Hello! My name is Issie and I’d like to be a part of the Fellwalking committee next year. Before joining this society my hiking experience was limited, I had never climbed a mountain before, let alone a hill. Fast forward I have been a member for nearly 2 years and I have become so confident and obsessed with everything hiking, it truly has made a difference. So I would love to bring forth some new passion for the outdoors and use the platforms we have to engage anyone who may be interested.
I have had some experience running public accounts before, and trying to engage an audience that isn’t just close friends. Having a creative mind will come in useful when advertising the socials and trips, plus I plan to use the community and the pictures we have taken on previous trips to advertise the real and raw adventure we have in the mountains (see below).
I plan to make the social media page more open for our members to have a say in walk suggestions, social ideas, feedback, and dinner options. To ultimately make the society members feel like they are contributing to the functioning of the society. I also plan to share exciting stories of running. hiking, mountaineering to the fellwalking instagram story to inspire and bring awareness of like minded achievements across the globe, for example Russ Cook who recently ran the length of Africa. I plan to re-post the questions that are asked to instagram. so no new members are discouraged because they aren’t sure what to expect/ prepare for (questions can also be allocated to the specialised committee member)
Finally. I will carry on with photos of the semester, regular social updates and consistent posting that Jacob has done excellently. (Not forgetting the odd memel) P.S. I am a good cook, so look forward to the weekend trip dinners If I become elected:)

Hi – My name is Jacob, I’m from sunny Cumbria, and I’m hoping to return to the role of social Media Secretary. In this role, I would continue using social media posts to create a buzz around NUFWS for those considering joining, shape the societies image, and provide clear information about walks, socials, and events for members. Most importantly, using the same 10 videos when producing memes to support these goals. Moving forward, I would use my experience from this year to ensure everything runs seamlessly and efficiently, since I have well-tested templates and routines in place for all aspects of running the social media. This means there won’t be any teething problems and I can focus on improvement – including the following:
- Greater accessibility considerations, like audio image description for posts.
- Expanding NUFWS’ online presence, e.g. into TikTok and Strava.
- Fostering relationships with other societies
- More exciting events like Photo of the Semester
- Putting the correct date on ticket release posts (TBC)
Furthermore, as a Computer Science graduate (hopefully), I have lots of experience with apps and design that has proven helpful so far. Next year, I’ll be studying Human-Computer Interaction, which should be even more beneficial for this role, as I’ll gain further understanding and skills in design, specifically when considering users’ experience. This means I’ll be able to make the social media more accessible, collaborative (with members), aesthetically pleasing, and functional.
Outside of social media, this year I’ve been involved in running almost all the trips, and helping with events like the ball, and it would be a pleasure to do so again!
With regards to my other responsibilities as committee, firstly I consider myself a strong walker, and able to aid other members if they are struggling on a trip (ask Joe). Secondly, I can pass on lots of different advice since this is my 4th year in the society, and finally I believe I am friendly and enjoying talking to and including (recruiting?) new/prospective members.
Thanks for reading 😊
Secretary

My name is Em. I’m a second year PhD student… which means I’ve been in NUFWS for a really long time! I’d love to give something back by joining committee.
With all of my knowledge about how the society works, I think I’m a great person to run for Secretary. I’m a very organised person, as shown by the fact I work across five different locations every working week. I’ve been in the society long enough that I know lots of great locations for walks, and I have the added benefit of being a local lass, with great ideas for walks everywhere from North Yorkshire to the top of Northumberland. I’m also a trail runner with some experience of marshalling races, so my chances of not losing you on a walk are hopefully pretty decent! Above all, I’m a very friendly person who loves the society and time outdoors, so I really think I’m a good person for the job. And if this doesn’t help you decide… there will be more cake if you vote for me!
Welfare Sec

Hi all, my name is Livia Sullivan, and I am a Second Year Pharmacology Student.
I am running for the role of Welfare Secretary driven by my passion for fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every individual feels they have a shoulder to lean on, should they need it.
I believe I am approachable, friendly, and empathetic, which are characteristics I consider to be necessary for the role. As Welfare Secretary, I would aim to encompass a proactive approach for the wellbeing of others. Whether it be academic stress, personal challenges, or simply feeling overwhelmed, I would listen without judgement and provide support and guidance where needed.
Moreover, I am committed to advocating for a positive atmosphere, prioritising the needs of the society members and making everyone feel welcome.
Thank you for your consideration and I hope I can count on your vote.
Social Sec

Hi, I’m Simon. I’d be great as social sec because of my nature as a kind, open-minded extravert. I find myself very comfortable in social situations and have a limitless social battery. I think I can keep peoples spirits up and encourage social activities on hike trips. I get along with everyone because I listen twice more than I speak. I’d like to plan more event style socials with different music genre’s, encourage day/weekend social events that aren’t just centred around drinking as well as encourage co-operative socials with other societies, history, running, amnesty, XR, surf etc. As well as take a democratic approach to event planning using polling, surveys etc. I am who I am; I’m a bit older which brings with it a better (learned) awareness to drinking responsibly as well as have a better sensitivity to people’s mental health in social situations. My weaknesses lie in my age (not out in soho or the cut every Wednesday) and my responsibilities on an MA course + work and career commissions, which however if I co-share the role of social sec with another person, I think I’d be able to live up to the responsibilities involved and bring a positive upbeat energy to the role.

Hi, my name is Joe, I’m going into my 2nd year as an urban planning student. you’ll have seen me a lot at the strawberry or the back of walks usually with something stupid food-wise in my backpack. I think I’ve been to almost every social this year, to the point where most of the strawberry staff know me by name (this is concerning but what can you do). I think I would be a good social sec as unlike our current Mr Cota I am not good at walking to Lady Greys, instead, I would try and vary our night-out locations bringing exotic locations such as dog and parrot and like other bars, I guess they exist too. Im also very interested in continuing and expanding more big event socials like the Tour de Metro, and the Cosy Joe’s karaoke night, as well as this I think there could be more sober socials and that’s something I want to get more involved in and happening more frequently. Because we’re definitely not a drinking society and that should probably be reflected more in our socials! For me, in my first year, this society was amazing and made me feel included and welcomed I have met a lot of people who I would consider my closest friends at university through it and I would be proud to continue that legacy next year
Walk Planner

Hi, I’m Matthew and I’m a 4th year medic, now heading into 5th year and next year will be my 4th year of being a part of the society. After 3 years of going on many of the different trips and having a great time on the walks I decided I would like to contribute to planning these so that others can have as good of a time as I have. Having now spent a year as the walk planner I am used to the work and planning routes for different ability levels, and would like to spend next year making fun routes that everyone will be able to enjoy regardless of who is coming on a trip. Having been here a few years and on committee I have a pretty good idea of how the society runs, what works and what doesn’t and I would love to continue to be involved in running the society.
Gear Sec

Hi I’m Laurence, a 1st year mechanical engineering student, a gators fan and nikwax enjoyer. I am going for the role of gear secretary because I think it is the role that most suits my character and skills. For anyone that has seen me they know I’m someone who comes well equipped when fellwalking, and I think that this role suits such avid attention to this aspect. A key thing for me from day to day is organisation, and as the role with an almost exclusive concern with organisation it seems perfect. As gear secretary I would like to make it easier for new members to get to grips with what gear is best to prioritise and how to best maintain bought equipment – it’s better to find out that boots need waterproofing before you buy them versus a year down the line for example.
President

Hi, I am Josh. I am currently studying the 2nd year of my biology degree at Newcastle university. I have been part of committee this year as treasurer giving me an understanding of how the society works. I also have a good level of walk leading and navigation skills and enjoy finding exciting new places and routes in the fells and highlands to explore. If elected president I would look to build on this year and try and pass on some navigation skills onto other members of the society.
