Meet the committee 2025/2026

President

Hi I’m Laurence, I’m studying Mechanical Engineering and am going into my 3rd year. I come from Wakefield in West Yorkshire and have gone walking in the peaks and the dales from a very young age so joining NUFWS was a no brainer when I came to uni. Excited to be president this year and hope to see as many of you as possible on the trips we will run this coming year. My favourite memory was the 1st day of Glen coe last year.

Vice President

Hi I’m Rose, I’m studying Civil Engineering and am going into my 2nd year. I love that NUFWS gives me the chance to get out the city as much as possible. If I’m not hiking I’m probably climbing or singing (or both). My favourite memory was winning last years pub quiz.

Social Secretaries

Hi I’m Julia, I’m studying Urban planning and am going into my 3rd year. This is my 3rd year of being a part of fellwalking and i love it so much, it allows me to get out have a nice walk and an expensive pint! everyone in the society is so lovely and ive met some of my closest friends here. i also enjoy bouldering DND and other assorted nerd hobbies! My favourite society memory was in first year when i thought i was super smart and bought a self heating chinese meal on my very first trip and it not cooking very well at all and generally being a terrible idea.

Hi I’m George, I’m studying Geography and am going into my 2nd year. I grew up in a village just outside of Wigan, and living in these more rural surroundings lended itself to a liking for the outdoors and walking in nature, ultimately resulting in the passion I have for fellwalking today. Joining fellwalking is, in my eyes, one of the best things I’ve done whilst at university, the society has been my main point of contact for socialising and getting to know others who share the same interests as me, so much so that 3 of my housemates are people I have met through the society. Furthermore, the society is a perfect way to get out and take a break from the somewhat chaotic city and university environment. Other passions of mine include sports; primarily football and table tennis, all things houses, and travelling, just to name a few. My favourite memory was experiencing the cloud inversion as we summited Ben Cruachan on the Crianlarich trip, my first weekend trip and a fantastic way to welcome me to them.

Walk Planner

Hi I’m Tom, I’m studying Civil Engineering and am going into a placement year. I’m Big Tom (as apposed to teeny tiny tom) and I’m from Nottingham. I was immediately drawn to fellwaking due to the friendly and inviting nature of the socials, and later found the walks were even better. Besides fellwaking, I love to cycle, surf and of course, trains. My favourite NUFWS memory is sending it down the icy slopes on winter skills or simply surviving Glencoe day one.

Social Media Secretary

Hi I’m Tom, I’m studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering and am going into my 2nd year. I’m from Cambridge, I joined NUFWS because i wanted to get outside and see the world more and have loved every moment of it. Outside of hiking i enjoy Climbing/ Bouldering, Rocketry and other assorted engineering projects. My favourite memory was sliding down ice slopes on Winter Skills.

Welfare Secretary

Hi I’m Emily, I’m studying Biomedical Genetics and am going into masters year. I’m just down the road from Newcastle in Durham. I got back into hiking after my dad and brother would go on walks almost every weekend as kids. It’s the perfect way to get out the city and unwind with likeminded people. Nothing can beat a squished sandwich at the top of a mountain with incredible views all around. I love the inclusivity of the society and chatting to people who love the outdoors just as much. My favourite memory was stargazing under the waterfall at camp in italy on international trip.

Gear Secretary

Hi I’m Issac, I am a 4th year geography student from Stratford upon Avon, just returning to Newcastle after living a year in Norway. Throughout uni, even while in Norway, Fellwalking has been a wonderful part of me. I have met most my friends and made some of my favourite moments from uni in the society. I love the outdoors and can’t wait to spend more time around the UK up mountains and in cabins. My favourite memory was when the vans got stuck in a muddy field for about 2 hours before a walk and we had the whole squad on pushing them out 🐧.

Secretary

Hi, I’m James! I’m going into my second year studying Computer Science and I’ve lived in Newcastle all my life!

What I love most about the society is how friendly people are — everyone gets along so well, and the evening socials on weekend trips are always great fun.

As Secretary, I hope to help organise some fantastic trips this year so everyone can enjoy amazing experiences with the society.

One of my favourite memories so far has been the stunning views at Glen Prosen and Mark’s Feta Pitta Breads🐧

Treasurer

Hi I’m Mark, I’m Studying Theoretical Physics and am going into my 3rd year. I’m Swiss/Cypriot and believe it or not I like hiking on the mountains. I also like maps. My favorite thing about the society is that I get to go on cool mountains with friends. I don’t know what else to say right now.

Mascot

Following a leisurely Summer Nads has returned as our NUFWS mascot. He’s hoping to continue a long tradition of not doing owt, since he’s a stuffed toy.
