NUFWS Committee 2026/27 Candidates

All the candidates and their manifesto’s for this years AGM taking place at 6pm on the 22nd of April

President

James:

Manifesto: Fellwalking has held a very prominent place in my university experience and is something I am truly passionate about. Being Secretary this year has taught me a lot about how the society runs and given me an insight into what I can do to make the society even better for next year. I would continue to help lead a committee to run our day and weekend trips at an affordable price, with varied difficulties across our walks and with well-maintained society kit we lend out ensuring the society is accessible and affordable. Everyone should be able to enjoy Fellwalking without making the investments into expensive gear.
Some goals for next year include:
• New equipment and better maintenance of existing inventory
• Improvements to the facilities we use to store our gear
• Modernise the NUFWS website and Instagram
• Creating a system for members to request gear for their own walks (through our website)
• Lead the committee to ensure trips are well planned and all deadlines are met on time
• New walk leaders, non-committee role consisting of experienced members to help manage groups on our trips
• Ensure all in a leadership position (committee and walk leaders) have appropriate training and knowledge on safety

Secretary

Emma:

Manifesto: Hi, I’m Emma! Next year I’ll be in my fifth year of doing medicine and I’d love to be the Secretary.
As a former Wilderness Medicine president I’ve done my fair share of wrangling with NUSU forms, negotiating with hostels and sacrificing my overdraft to overpriced deposits.
I’m addicted to hard work, like a laugh and most importantly I’m at my happiest at the top of a hill in the middle of nowhere.
Whilst I may be lacking a Garmin, I promise to always bring a colossal amount of snacks and to do my best to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes!

Treasurer

Tom:

Manifesto: Hi, I’m Tom, and I’m running to be next year’s treasurer. I have been part of NUFWS for 2 years now and have loved every minute of it. I have been on the committee as Social Media Sec for the past year; this will make me a valuable member to have on next year’s committee, as I already have good experience with the inner workings of the society and how everything functions. Furthermore, I have also been the treasurer for another society over the past year. This sets me up perfectly to take over as treasurer for NUFWS next year, as I already have experience with managing numerous Excel spreadsheets to make sure the finances are in check. I also have a good understanding of the NUSU systems involved in being treasurer. Overall, this will allow for a smooth and effective transition into next year’s committee, making sure that next year’s finances are run without issue. Outside of this, I am also a friendly, talkative person who people can come to if they are struggling on walks or not feeling great. I hope you vote for me, as I’d love to have the opportunity to be next year’s treasurer!

Welfare

Eve:

Manifesto: Hi, I’m Eve Dagger — a friendly northern girl you might already know from some of the many day and weekend trips we’ve shared. As I head into my second year of architecture, I’m keen to be your Fell Walking Welfare Officer (and help keep the rest of the committee in check — let’s be honest someone has to). I’m organised, approachable, and genuinely care about looking after everyone in the society. I’m always happy to be someone people can come to — whether that’s for a chat on a walk or something more serious. I know how to have fun, but also when it matters to be there for people. I’ve held similar roles in my sports clubs over the past few years and always honour my commitments. If elected, I’ll make sure everyone feels supported, included, and able to enjoy everything our society has to offer.

Social Sec

Dan:

Manifesto: My name is Daniel Partleton and I’m running for Social Secretary. This will be my second year in NUFWS, and I’ve seen first-hand that what makes this society great isn’t just the walking, it’s the people around it.
Anyone can organise a pub trip. A good Social Sec builds a community people actually want to be part of. Socials are what turn a group of walkers into a proper social circle, where new members settle in quickly, friendships form naturally, and people stay engaged beyond the hiking trips.
As Social Sec, I’ll make sure we have consistent, well-run events that people genuinely look forward to. That means everything from our regular trips to The Strawberry to bigger socials like beach barbecues, ceilidhs, and joint events with other societies. I’ll also continue and build on the social football sessions that have already proven popular this semester.
My goal is simple: to make the social side of NUFWS as much a reason to join as the walking.

Assistant Social Sec

Josh:
Manifesto: I am running for Assistant Social Sec because this year I really committed my time to becoming the Team Leader for the Newcastle Kilimanjaro Fundraising challenge. I recruited a team of 25 people to climb Kilimanjaro with me, this took a lot of social skills and built loads of confidence when promoting the cause and chatting to new people. I will carry this energy into the fellwalking society by organising lively and inclusive classic and new events. I am a friendly and talkative guy looking forwards to bringing up a new generation of fell walkers next year alongside the new Social Sec. I am committed to my endeavours and will be a present face at all our events in 2026/2027.

Social Media Sec

Tom:

Manifesto: Hi all, I’m tom and I do civil engineering and am currently on a placement but will be in third year next year. I’m walking planner this year, however I want to take a more involved role in this society as I’ve had such an incredible time over the years with all of you! Hence I’ll be running for social media secretary. I think I’ll be a good fit for the role as I’m great with deadlines (never even had to use a PEC) and have past experiene with both Photoshop and illustrator. I’m keen to put our best foot forward for all those who’ll be joining next year by showing all the great things we can offer. I’m also keen to bring back photo of the term as well as wanting to capture more of our trips on camera to showcase, not just the beautiful scenery. Hopefully you’ll all chose me as next year’s social media secretary! Thanks 💜

Aaron:

Manifesto: Hi im, Aaron, and I’m currently a first-year data science student. Given my experience in watching Instagram reels, I feel like I’m the right fit to join the committee as social media secretary.

Having spent most of my free time in the mountains, I believe I’m in the best position to put my two passions of reels and fellwalking together to help create engaging and informative feed for the Society.

My Commitment to the Society
Informative Consistency: I will ensure all members have clear, accessible information regarding trips and socials.

Inclusivity and Outreach: I will ensure I make it accessible for all new members to find out exactly what they can get out of joining a society like fellwalking and provide them with all the information they need, ensuring that hikers of all experience levels feel welcome to join us.

Authentic Storytelling: I aim to document our Trips, providing a high-quality archive of our season.

Best Social Media Admin: I’m chronically online, so all enquiries sent to the social media page will be answered accurately and efficiently.

I look forward to the opportunity.

Gear Sec

Ella:

Manifesto: Hi, I’m Ella, a first year Geography BSc student.
Having enjoyed my first year being a part of NUFWS, I want to be more involved in helping everything run, and think I would make a good gear secretary for the society.
Growing up in a mountaineering family, I have been raised to know how to look after my equipment so it stays in the best condition possible – a skill I will devote towards looking after society equipment. I am also a well organised person – and will dedicate my free time (which, as a geographer, I seem to have a lot of!) towards making sure that the gear store stays tidy and organised, and that our trips will run as smoothly as possible!
When buying new gear for myself, I always spend time to do research to try and find the best quality for the most affordable price, which means that when the society is in need of new equipment, I will be dedicated to getting us the best gear we can.
Additionally, doing art as a hobby has given me artistic experience that I hope to use to my best ability to create good designs for our society merch.

Walk Planner:

Ollie:

Manifesto: Hi, my name is Ollie and I’m currently a second year Computer Science student. I’ve been in NUFWS for two years and now I’d like to be part of running the society as next year’s walk planner. I’ve been fellwalking pretty much my whole life and over the years I’ve built up a good understanding of what I think makes a walk enjoyable. Through walking in different parts of the UK and abroad, I’ve seen a range of routes which I could bring into planning a variety of different walks next year. If chosen I’d aim to keep a mix of walks at different difficulty levels so everyone can get involved, whether they’re new or more experienced. I’d also like to introduce more technical routes including scrambling of different grades for people who would enjoy that. I think I’d be a good addition to committee next year as I’m organised and reliable, and I’d make sure routes are properly planned and ready in advance of each trip and would put real effort into making the walks enjoyable for everyone.
